From 2006 to 2014, on 83 separate days, I walked around the entire coastline of Taiwan. I hiked along beaches, trails, highways, abandoned cliff-side roads, and crossed rivers and bridges. My route took me through farmlands, swamps, undeveloped natural areas, industrial parks, crowded cities, small towns, and quaint fishing villages. I got to see the day-to-day life of Taiwan, and was impressed again and again by the cheerful, hardworking, family-focused lifestyle of the people, who were usually very kind to the oddball foreigner walking in their midst. The journey gave me a sense of connection to the country that made me feel almost Taiwanese, from the ankles down anyway! My book Taiwanese Feet is a travelogue of that experience, combined with stories of the geography and history of Taiwan.
